He enjoyed and was a very good cook, and did most of the cooking at home, and in later years the household tasks as well.

He was a very keen on pigeon breeding and racing from a very early age until the early 1990s and was often waiting for his birds to return from a race, they had rings on their legs that had to be removed and logged into the clock.

Unfortunately young son Michael messed up an important race by jamming something in the clock and he lost the race because of it, He gave him the clock in later years.

He had a fall at home on 25th July 1993, and was admitted to Havenstreet nursing home for an assessment, liked it there, and stayed until his death on 31st July 1996.

Notes on Amy Dorothy (Doll) Cant nee Wolfe:

Amy was  born at  3 St Cross Cottages, Black House, Little London, Newport. On 3oth August 1907.

In a row of 4 terrace houses, called "Blackhouse" because they were covered in tar on the side facing the road, which was the side that caught the weather.

Her mother (Amy Wolfe nee Sheaf) was tall and slim, and over her child bearing years never had the right food to live on, money being very tight, After an operation for appendicitis she got bronchitis after discharge from hospital, which made her weak and frail, she passed away 25th Feb 1924 aged 43.

Amy Dorothy was then 16, her father died 4 years later and she brought forward her marriage to John Charles William Henry (Jack) Cant to 4th June 1928, at Newport registry office, so that her siblings could remain with them.

When the youngest children, Barry and Mick, were born in June 1944, Amy, suffered a nervous breakdown.

The children were taken in among families from Jacks parents and siblings, during the weeks she was away from home, we believe Barry and Mick went with her into hospital.

Amy, in later years  developed acrophobia, and missed all the family's weddings, and did not venture out of Prospect Road again, despite her eldest son John, having many attempts to get her to.

Suddenly she let daughter Joyce and Bob Rowson take her to Johns house, who then managed to take her,

on Christmas eve 1978, visiting her children's homes, and pleasantly surprised everyone!

From then on, Jack and Amy (Doll) went out as often as they could including regular Sunday teas out.

Amy died at St Mary’s hospital 14th January 1987 after a stroke.
